Soho&Trafalgar Square

Today starts the first week of class! BYU started last week, but they allowed us to fly in and get adjusted before throwing class in the mix. I do not have classes today, so I still had one more day to get things done and see the city. For one of our classes, we have to go on 12 walks around the city of London. The walks take around 2 hours to complete, so we decided to head down towards Soho to complete one! We walked through many little allies seeing shops, restaurants, outside markets, and sites that were so interesting. We had a book to guide us so that we could read about the sites we passed!

Soho is actually a very historic place. For some reason when I think of Soho, I think of shopping?!... Don't even ask me why. It couldn't be more opposite! We read about the effect of immigrants and Charles II and all about the French Protestant Church.

The girls and I by Charles II in the middle of the square.

We then came to the street where there was a cholera break out in the 1800's. Over 10,000 people died. A Dr. John Snow discovered that the disease was mainly coming from the water everyone was using from a specific pump in the middle of the street! A A "mock" pump was placed there to remember those that died and recognize the Dr. for his "life saving" discover... literally.

Before getting to our destination of Trafalgar Square we stopped for some sugar free, fat free frozen yogurt :] Just like Provo, there are TONS of yogurt places everywhere, but this one looked exceptionally good. LOVE the name...who would ever think to name their shop Snog??..What does that even mean?!

After our tasty treat, we walked into Trafalgar Square from the opposite way. It was so neat to see it at night (see previous post), but I thought it was even more beautiful in the daytime. It is so huge and has so many historic statues and a fountain in one area. It was great to not only see it, but read about it (yes I am a dork for reading about things, but there is so much to see around here, we just can't keep track of it all).

Life in the center has picked up as far as business goes. I haven't even started classes, but everyone else is running around busy with tons of homework already! Not fun...time is definitely going to speed up. I start classes tomorrow...we will see how that goes! Tonight we are thinking Harrods?!? For those who don't know this is one of the most expensive places to shop, and its as big as a mall, but only one store! Am I buying anything?...I think not. But who knows where the night will take us...

London is an adventure...

Life is an adventure.

More fun things about England:

The escalators are the same as the streets, opposite of America as far as which way they travel (down is on the left, up on the right).
International stamp prices are about the same as the USA (surprising because everything else is so expensive).
You see more men out running than women.
No one has their dog on a leash.
Right now it gets dark at 4, but in April it won't get dark until almost 9pm.
Peanut butter here is awful.
Brands are the same, but brand names are different.

More to come :]
